PSG shorten Lionel Messi suspension, available to play on Saturday – sources

Lionel Messi will train with the Paris Saint-Germain first team on Tuesday and will be available for selection for their match against Ajaccio on Saturday, sources told ESPN.

The Argentine, who sources say was suspended for making a trip to Saudi Arabia last week and missing practice as a result, trained on his own at the Ligue 1 leaders’ facility Monday while the rest of the first team was given the day off following a win over Troyes on Sunday.

Sources added that PSG took the decision to shorten Messi’s suspension, originally reported by French media to be two weeks, after the World Cup winner issued an apology to the club, his teammates and fans for missing practice last week.

Messi will still be fined two weeks’ wages, approximately €1.6 million, the sources added.
PSG posted a picture of Messi training on social media, along with the caption: “The Argentinian striker from Paris Saint-Germain was back in training on Monday 8 May.”
Later on Monday, Messi attended the Laureus Awards in Paris, where he was named Sportsman of the Year and also accepted the award for World Team of the Year on behalf of Argentina, who he led to the 2022 World Cup trophy in December.

Messi’s future at PSG remains unclear, with a source close to the Argentina captain saying he received a formal offer to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal next season, while adding that a contract renewal at PSG is not in the cards for the 36-year-old.
Saudi Arabia appointed Messi its tourism ambassador last year, and he visited Jeddah in May 2022.
He returned in January to play a friendly match with PSG against a team of Saudi League stars, where he faced longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Al Nassr.
PSG are six points clear of Lens and eight in front of Marseille with four rounds of games remaining this season as they remain on course to defend their Ligue 1 title from last season.

Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele scored an own goal and Dwight McNeil added two more as Everton cut their hosts apart with lightning quick breaks, and then absorbed huge pressure in the second half, eventually conceding when Alexis Mac Allister netted for the home team.

The Merseyside club moved to 32 points from 35 games, two points clear of the drop zone, as they seek to avoid a first relegation since 1951, while Brighton’s hopes of European football next season were dented and they sit in seventh with 55 points from 33 games.

“They [Brighton] play a particular way with two boxes in midfield. I said to the lads it is about focus. Our tactical shape has been pretty good since I’ve come in here. But it’s about focus when they change their tune and try and pop it around the corner and play neat and tidy,” Everton manager Sean Dyche told BBC.

“But equally it’s not just about shadow play, you’ve got to go and break it up and first half we did that so many times. Second half they had a good spell but we calmed that down and I thought we saw the game through very well.”
Everton drew 2-2 at Leicester City in their previous game when they created more than enough chances to win, and Dyche believes they gained confidence from that result.
“A lot of people thought we were good at Leicester, we were very good and conceded soft goals,” he added. “Tonight we got paid back for that performance because the energy was there, the tactical performance, but also the quality.”
Everton had 23 percent possession in the game, but were excellent in breaking down Brighton attacks and flooding forward on the counter, scoring 10 percent of their Premier League goals this season in a dream first half.
“It’s massive. We started on the front foot, we had a game plan and we stuck to it. We were all brilliant today and we deserved the three points,” McNeil told BT Sport. “We couldn’t have got off to a better start. It’s a credit to the lads, we’ve been in a difficult position this year. Now we’ve just got to build on this game.
“It’s massive confidence now, this is about us kicking on as a team. We have a massive game on Sunday [at home to Manchester City] and then two massive games after that.”
Doucoure’s first came after 34 seconds as he tapped home from close range, finishing off a low cross after being set up by the excellent Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Another quick Everton break saw McNeil cross for Doucoure to net a superb second with an excellent volley from 12 yards.

McNeil’s low cross was then directed into his own net by Steele, before the Everton winger added two more in the second half, also from quick counter-attacks.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi made four changes at half-time and his positive move made for a vastly improved home team after the break, but despite being camped around the Everton box, they managed only one goal through Mac Allister.
“Still three cup finals and we have to keep going. You have to take a lot of positives from that,” Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford said. “The gaffer [Sean Dyche] made a couple of changes. We set the standard early.
“We have to keep going as a group, the togetherness is there but we mustn’t take the foot off the gas.”
