Rivers State Stakeholders Express Concern About Silence on Local Elections
The Labour Party in Rivers State says there’s nothing wrong if the state Governor Siminalayi Fubara appoints caretaker chairmen for local government areas to give him time to reconstitute the state’s Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC. The spokesperson for the Labour Party in the state, Gogo Wellington tells our correspondent that it is within the right of the Governor to appoint caretaker chairmen after the expiration of the tenure of the current council chairmen.
Mr. Wellington said his party’s decision to seek court determination of the true members of the state House of Assembly is to remove every obstacle that will hinder the governor from reconstituting RSIEC.
Also speaking, the chairman of the social democratic Party in Rivers state, Solsuema Osaro said his party is still at a loss about the next move of the state government on the conduct of the local government election. Recall that the three-year tenure of the current council chairmen is meant to elapse on the 16th of June 2024, having taken their Oath of office on the 17th of June 2021.
