In a landmark move, Meta Platforms Incorporated, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp, has announced plans to monetize Nigerian creators starting June 2024. This decision was revealed during a meeting between Meta representatives and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu at the state house in Abuja on March 21, 2024.

President Tinubu emphasized the importance of Nigeria embracing technological advancements and highlighted his administration’s commitment to training three million Nigerian youths in digital technology through the 3MTT programme. He underscored the significance of Nigerian youth in driving digital economic expansion and expressed Nigeria’s readiness to lead the African continent in digital technology.

In response, Sir Clegg from Meta expressed gratitude for an executive order issued by President Tinubu, facilitating the landing of a Meta-backed deep-sea cable in Nigeria. This infrastructure project is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and boost economic activity across the African continent.

Moreover, Meta announced plans to introduce a feature on its Instagram app in June 2024, enabling Nigerian creators to monetize their content and earn a living through the platform. This move comes as a response to the frustration felt by thousands of Nigerian creators who were previously unable to monetize their content on Meta platforms.

Both parties expressed their commitment to fostering partnerships and cooperation in technological advancements, with the Nigerian government assuring Meta of policies that will encourage technology expansion in the country.
