NAFDAC Raid: N50M of Counterfeit Products Seized in Abuja

NAFDAC Arrest One Shut Down 2 Water Sachet Factories In Aluu

In a significant operation aimed at curbing the circulation of counterfeit products, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) executed a series of raids across popular shopping outlets in Abuja. The targeted establishments included Sahad Stores, H-Medix branches in Wuse 2 and Gwarinpa, 3rd Avenue, as well as Utako market. The raids, conducted on Thursday, led to the seizure of counterfeit cosmetics and drugs, with a total value estimated at N50 million.

Embugushiki-Musa Godiya, the NAFDAC Head of Investigation and Enforcement/Federal Taskforce, FCT, Abuja, highlighted the health risks posed by such counterfeit goods. He particularly pointed out fake NIVEA products, Jik bleach, Harpic toilet cleaner, and Airwick room freshener among the items confiscated. The counterfeit cosmetics were discovered and seized at H-Medix, while fake drugs were confiscated at Utako market.

Mr. Godiya expressed concern over the sale of substandard products, emphasizing the potential for serious health issues such as cancer, kidney damage, and skin rashes. He called on Nigerians to be cautious when purchasing products and to always verify the NAFDAC registration number.

NAFDAC’s enforcement action has garnered mixed reactions from the public. While many have applauded the agency’s efforts to protect consumers from harmful products, others have criticized the regulatory body for not doing enough to prevent these products from reaching the shelves in the first place.

The operation is part of a larger effort by NAFDAC to combat the sale of fake goods and safeguard public health. It underscores the agency’s commitment to ensuring the safety and integrity of the Nigerian market.
