Senator Ayogu Eze was born on November 23, 1958, in Enugu, Nigeria.
He is a Nigerian politician and lawyer who has served as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria since 2015.
He is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Before joining politics, he had a successful journalism career, working as a reporter and staff writer with The Guardian newspaper of Nigeria between 1983 and 1989.
He became the head of the Insight Team of The Guardian’s features desk and was later deployed to head the Guardian Express, an evening paper from the stable.
In 1992, he was appointed as a Special asst to the Enugu State Governor.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
He has also attended executive education programs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, the Säid Business School of Oxford University, and the Judge Business School of the University of Cambridge.
In a mid-term evaluation of Senators in May 2009, ThisDay newspaper said that he effectively manned the information machinery of the Senate and was articulate in debates in plenary motions.
He has been described as one of the most powerful of the senators.
He was elected Senator for the Enugu North constituency of Enugu State, Nigeria, taking office on June 5, 2007.
He has held several positions, including being a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and serving as a commissioner and Special Adviser to the Governor.
He contested the 2019 governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but withdrew from the election when his name was omitted from the final list of candidates by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He was a pioneer national ex officio member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which was formed in 1998.
Senator Ayogu Eze passed away at the age of 66 on April 25, 2024, in an Abuja hospital after a protracted illness.
