Storm Devastates Prison: 119 Inmates Escape in Niger State
In a shocking turn of events, an intense rainstorm wreaked havoc on the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, leading to the escape of 119 inmates. The heavy downpour, accompanied by strong winds, struck late Wednesday night, causing significant damage to the facility, including the perimeter fence. This unfortunate incident has raised concerns about the structural integrity of correctional centers in the region and the safety of both inmates and the public.
The rainstorm, which began around 9 p.m., unleashed its fury on the old Suleja Correctional Centre, located in Suleja Local Government of Niger State. The storm’s ferocity led to the collapse of parts of the inner fencing, providing an opportunity for a substantial number of inmates to flee the premises. Local residents and security forces were caught off guard by the sudden surge of fleeing prisoners, leading to a chaotic scene in the aftermath of the storm.
In response to the incident, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the escape of 119 inmates and has initiated efforts to recapture them. So far, 10 inmates have been apprehended, with a concerted effort by the NCoS and other security agencies to track down the remaining escapees underway. The NCoS has assured the public that it is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of citizens and has urged them to report any suspicious activities or sightings of the escapees to the nearest security agency.
The NCoS spokesperson, Adamu Duza, stated that the Service is aware of the outdated infrastructure of many of its facilities, which were built during the colonial era. He emphasized that efforts are being made to modernize the facilities, as evidenced by the ongoing construction of six 3000-capacity ultra-modern custodial centers in all the geo-political zones in Nigeria and the renovation of existing ones. This incident underscores the urgent need for infrastructure improvements in Nigeria’s correctional facilities to ensure the safety and security of both inmates and the public.
As the search for the remaining escapees continues, the NCoS has called on the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies in order to apprehend the fleeing inmates and maintain public safety.
