Port Harcourt Residents in for a Long New Year's Day 2023 as Fuel Stations Remain Closed

In recent days, Port Harcourt has been experiencing fuel scarcity, affecting various parts of the city. This scarcity has led to long queues at filling stations, causing inconvenience for residents. Some filling stations are selling fuel at higher prices, with reports of fuel being sold for as high as 800 per liter in certain locations. This contrasts with the official price range of 635 to 650 per liter in other areas. The cause of this scarcity remains unclear, with some residents expressing concern and frustration over the situation.

The fuel scarcity has been noted to be a recurring issue, not only in Port Harcourt but also in other parts of Nigeria, such as Abuja and Uyo. This situation has been attributed to various factors, including logistical issues and the diversion of fuel trucks to other areas. Despite claims by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited that the logistical issues causing fuel scarcity had been addressed, the problem persists in several locations.

In response to the fuel scarcity in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, and other parts of the country, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has urged the federal government to fulfill its promise to reopen the old Port Harcourt Refinery. This measure is seen as a potential solution to alleviate the fuel scarcity in the region. Additionally, the Port Harcourt Refining Company is expected to commence the production of refined petroleum products soon, which could further help to address the fuel scarcity issue.

As the situation continues to unfold, residents of Port Harcourt and other affected areas hope for a swift resolution to the fuel scarcity problem, with expectations that measures such as the reopening of the old Port Harcourt Refinery and the commencement of operations at the Port Harcourt Refining Company will help to alleviate the situation in the near future.
