Former Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika and Daughter Face N2.7bn Fraud Charges
Nigeria’s former Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika, alongside his daughter, Fatimah, and two other suspects, are set to be arraigned in court on Thursday, May 9, 2024. The charges are related to an alleged N2.7 billion contract fraud uncovered in the Aviation Ministry during Sirika’s tenure. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been investigating Sirika over allegations of abuse of office and fraudulent activities.
Sirika, who served under the administration of former president Muhammadu Buhari, is accused of awarding contracts to his brother, Abubakar, despite the latter being a civil servant, which is against the norms of public office. The contracts in question include the construction of a Terminal Building at Katsina Airport, the establishment of a Fire Truck Maintenance and Refurbishment Centre at the same airport, the procurement and installation of lifts, air conditioners, and power generators in Aviation House, Abuja, and the procurement of Magnus Aircraft and a simulator for the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria.
The EFCC’s investigation revealed that out of the total contract sum of N8,069,176,864.00, Sirika paid out N3.2 billion to Engirios Nigerian Limited, owned by his brother. This amount was then transferred to various companies and individuals.
Sirika is scheduled to appear before Justice Sylvanus Oriji of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Maitama, to face a six-count amended charge related to the alleged fraud. The arraignment comes after Sirika was detained by the EFCC following his interrogation on April 23, 2024.
The trial is expected to shed light on the alleged fraudulent activities and contracts awarded during Sirika’s tenure as Aviation Minister and could have significant implications for the former minister and those involved in the case.
