Court Grants Abba Kyari 2 Weeks Bail to Attend Mothers Burial
In a recent development, a Federal High Court in Abuja has granted a two-week bail to the embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari. Kyari, who has been in detention for the past 27 months, was granted this temporary reprieve to attend his mother’s burial rites.
The decision was made on compassionate grounds, allowing Kyari to return home and pay his respects to his late mother, Yachilla Kyari, who passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024. She was survived by 10 children, including Abba, who is the eldest son. The court has set a date for the determination of his bail application in the trial over drug-related charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following his arrest over two years ago on February 14, 2022.
The two-week bail period is intended to allow Kyari to conclude his mother’s funeral rites. Kyari was the former commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and was arrested following his alleged involvement in a drug-related case.
This temporary release marks a significant moment for Kyari, who has been in detention since February 14, 2022. The court has scheduled the determination of his bail application for Friday, May 31, in his ongoing trial over drug-related charges.
