Tinubu, Shettima, Akpabio, Others Render Nigeria’s New National Anthem, ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’

President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and other dignitaries have officially rendered Nigeria’s new national anthem, “Nigeria We Hail Thee,” at the flag-off of the FCT rail mass transit system in Abuja. This event took place on May 29, 2024, marking a significant moment in Nigeria’s history as the country adopts its old national anthem, which was initially used from October 1, 1960, until 1978.

The decision to revert to the old national anthem was made official when President Bola Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law. The bill, which sought to reinstate the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” was disclosed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a joint session of the National Assembly. This move is part of a series of events commemorating the 25th anniversary of Nigeria’s 4th Republic.

The lyrics of the old national anthem were written by a British expatriate, Lillian Jean Williams, who resided in Nigeria during its independence era. The music was composed by Frances Berda. The anthem played a crucial role in fostering Nigeria’s national identity and promoting unity throughout the 1960s and late 1970s.

The revival of the old national anthem is expected to evoke a sense of national pride and unity among Nigerians, reconnecting them with their rich cultural heritage. It is also hoped that the return of the anthem would inspire a sense of national unity and pride among Nigerians, encouraging them to act according to the patriotic lyrics contained in the national anthem.
