Senator Sani Musa appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to shelve their scheduled strike action. The appeal was made in light of the broader implications of the planned strike on the nation’s prosperity. The Senator’s statement was issued on June 2, 2024, in Minna. This appeal comes amid a standoff between organized labor and the federal government over issues related to a new national minimum wage and the reversal of a recent hike in electricity tariffs.

The National Assembly has also taken steps to mediate in the standoff, as part of moves to avert the impending nationwide indefinite strike starting June 3, and a shutdown of the nation. The National Assembly’s intervention is aimed at resolving the deadlock on a new national minimum wage and the reversal of the recent hike in electricity tariffs. The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, are leading the mediation efforts.

In addition, the National Assembly Leadership and the Chairmen of the Senate and House Committees on Labour, Employment and Productivity respectively, Senator Diket Plang, and Rep. Adegboyega Adefarati, are looking to engage both parties in constructive dialogue and explore a variety of solutions in addressing the issues at hand.

This move by the National Assembly is a proactive step towards preventing the strike and ensuring the continuation of economic activities across the country. The aim is to find a mutually acceptable resolution that is in the best interest of the country.
