National Assembly Fail to Reach Agreement With NLC & TUC As Strike Enters Day 1

Nlc Fg Meeting Over Subsidy Removal Png 1

The National Assembly’s last-minute efforts to avert the planned indefinite strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have unfortunately failed. The strike, which commenced on June 3, 2024, is a result of unresolved issues regarding the new minimum wage. Despite the National Assembly leadership’s attempts to mediate and prevent the strike, the NLC and TUC have decided to proceed with their industrial action.

The strike is in response to the government’s failure to agree on a new national minimum wage and reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs. The tripartite committee on a new National Minimum Wage set up by the government failed to make a decision on a new national minimum wage after several meetings. The trade unions had given the government a deadline to conclude on a new minimum wage, which expired on April 18, 2024.

The National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, held a meeting with the NLC and TUC leadership to find a resolution. However, the meeting ended in a deadlock, with the NLC and TUC insisting on proceeding with the strike.

The government, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and other top officials, had hoped to reach an agreement with the unions to avoid the strike. However, the NLC and TUC have decided to proceed with the strike, which is expected to have significant economic implications.

The strike comes at a time when the country is grappling with economic challenges, including high inflation and a weakening currency. The industrial action is expected to further exacerbate these issues, leading to a potential shutdown of economic activities across the country.

The government and the National Assembly are now under pressure to find a solution to the impasse and prevent the strike from causing further economic harm. The situation remains fluid, with both sides expected to continue their efforts to find a resolution.
