Real Madrid officially announced the signing of French superstar Kylian Mbappé on a five-year deal on Monday, June 3, 2024, marking the end of one of the most anticipated transfer sagas in soccer history. The 25-year-old forward joins the Spanish giants from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a free transfer when his contract with PSG expires on June 30.

Mbappé’s move to Real Madrid had been widely expected after he declared his intention to leave PSG at the end of the season. In a video released in May, Mbappé expressed his gratitude towards PSG, stating: “I wanted to announce to you all that it’s my last year at Paris Saint-Germain.”

The France captain was asked about his future by France President Emmanuel Macron at the national team’s Clairefontaine training camp on Monday, June 3. Although Madrid was not mentioned during their conversation, multiple reports have said he will join the record 15-time Champions League winner.

Mbappé joined PSG in 2017 in a deal worth 180 million euros ($195 million) and scored a club record 256 goals. He will lead two-time winner France at the June 14-July 14 European Championship.

The forward has agreed to a deal with Real until 2029, earning 15m euros (£12.8m) a season, plus a 150m euro (£128m) signing-on bonus to be paid over five years, and he will keep a percentage of his image rights.

Mbappé’s addition to Real Madrid’s roster is expected to bolster their attacking options significantly, joining the likes of Vinícius Jr. and Jude Bellingham in the Spanish capital to form a potential soccer dynasty.
