Vice President’s Plane Vanishes Over Malawi
On June 10, 2024, a plane carrying Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Chilima, disappeared from radar and lost contact with ground control. The aircraft, belonging to the Malawi Defense Force (MDF), was en route to Mzuzu, where Chilima was scheduled to attend the burial of the late Ralph Kasambara in Nkhata Bay.
The plane took off from the capital, Lilongwe, at 9:17 am local time and was supposed to land at Mzuzu International Airport at 10:02 am. However, it failed to make its scheduled landing and went off the radar. Aviation authorities and the MDF have been unable to establish contact with the aircraft since.
In response to the incident, President Lazarus Chakwera has cancelled his scheduled trip to the Bahamas and ordered all regional and national agencies to conduct an immediate search and rescue operation to locate the missing plane.
The situation has sparked widespread concern and uncertainty, with reports indicating that the plane may have crashed in the Chikangawa forest due to bad weather conditions. However, this has not been officially confirmed.
Vice President Chilima’s phone was last available at around 10:30 am on the day of the incident. The search for the missing plane and the Vice President continues, with authorities and the public eagerly awaiting updates on the situation.
