Nigeria Celebrates 25 Years of Democracy

Nigeria recently marked a significant milestone in its political history with the celebration of 25 years of uninterrupted democracy. This event was commemorated on June 12, 2024, highlighting the nation’s progress in maintaining democratic governance since its transition from military rule in 1999. The celebration was a reflection of the resilience and commitment of the Nigerian people in upholding democratic values and participating in the democratic process.

The event, themed “25 Years of Enduring Democracy: Prospects for the Future,” was held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. It was attended by notable dignitaries, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Shettima Kashim, and other key figures in the Nigerian political landscape. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, in his welcome address, expressed optimism about the country’s democratic journey. He stated that the celebration should afford the nation and its government the opportunity to salute the courage and commitment of Nigerians for remaining steadfast and believing in the values of democracy despite numerous challenges.

The event also featured a keynote address by former Speaker of the House of Representatives and former Governor of Katsina State, Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari. He highlighted the progress made in the past 25 years and the prospects for the future of democracy in Nigeria.
