Germany Beat Scotland 5-1 in Euro 2024 Opener
In the opening match of Euro 2024, Germany delivered a crushing 5-1 defeat to Scotland, setting a high standard for the tournament and sending a strong message to the other teams. The game, held at Munich’s Allianz Arena, saw Germany dominate from the start, with goals from Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala putting them comfortably ahead within the first 20 minutes.
The first half ended disastrously for Scotland, as defender Ryan Porteous was sent off and Germany’s Kai Havertz converted the resulting penalty kick. This left Scotland at a significant disadvantage going into the second half.
The second half saw Germany continue their dominance, with substitute Niclas Füllkrug scoring their fourth goal in the 68th minute. Emre Can added a fifth in stoppage time, capping off a comprehensive victory for the host nation.
Despite the one-sided scoreline, Scotland managed to score a consolation goal late in the game, with a free-kick leading to an own goal by Germany’s Antonio Rudiger.
The result marked Germany’s largest-ever margin of victory in a European Championship opener, and also delivered Scotland’s biggest loss at the competition. The match was a significant setback for Scotland, but they will have to regroup quickly, with matches against Hungary and Switzerland still to come in the group stage.
