Why I Resigned as Nigerian Coach-Finid George
Finidi George has resigned as the head coach of the Nigeria national football team, the Super Eagles. This decision comes after the team’s disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they managed only a draw against South Africa and suffered a defeat to Benin Republic. Finidi, who was appointed in April 2024, succeeding Jose Peseiro, had a brief tenure of just two matches in charge.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had earlier announced that it would appoint a foreign technical adviser to oversee the team, which was seen as a demotion for Finidi. This move likely influenced his decision to step down from his position.
Finidi’s resignation was confirmed by former Super Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, on his X account. The news was also reported by several media outlets, including Vanguard, Punch, Daily Post, Channels Television, and The Guardian.
The Super Eagles’ performance under Finidi has been far from satisfactory, and the team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup are now in jeopardy. The NFF will now have to search for a new coach to lead the team in the remaining qualifying matches for the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.
Finidi’s resignation is a significant development in Nigerian football, and it remains to be seen how the team will perform under new leadership.
