Gov Fubara Tasks Head of LGA Officials to Takeover The Council Secretariat

Governor Fubara has taken decisive action amidst the escalating tensions in Rivers State over the expiration of local government chairmen’s tenures. In a move to ensure a smooth transition and maintain stability, he has tasked the heads of local government administration officials to take over the council secretariats.

This development comes as youths in several local government areas have seized control of the council secretariats in response to the chairmen’s assertion, supported by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, that they can remain in office for an additional six months under the Local Government Amendment Law passed by the Martin Amaewhule-led 27-member House of Assembly loyal to the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike.

Governor Fubara, in a bid to prevent any further unrest and ensure a peaceful transition, has directed the heads of local government administration officials to take over the council secretariats. This move is aimed at ensuring that the outgoing chairmen vacate their offices peacefully and that the governance of the local government areas continues without disruption.

The governor’s decision has been met with mixed reactions, with some applauding his proactive approach to maintaining stability, while others criticize the move as a power grab. However, Governor Fubara remains resolute in his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition and preventing any potential for violence or unrest in the state.

As the situation continues to unfold, all eyes are on Governor Fubara and the heads of local government administration officials as they navigate this complex and tense situation.
