Kano State Government Stands by Sanusi as Emir Despite Court Ruling

In a recent development, the Kano State government has reaffirmed its stance on Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, despite a court ruling that removed him from the position. The Federal High Court in Kano, in a ruling delivered on Thursday, nullified Sanusi’s reappointment as the 16th Emir of Kano.

Reacting to the court’s decision, the Kano State government has insisted that Sanusi remains the Emir. The state government has also taken steps to ensure his continued occupancy of the position. As part of these measures, the Kano State government has instructed the Commissioner of Police to remove Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano, from the Nasarawa Emirs’ cemetery, where he has been residing since being relocated by security agencies.

The Kano State government’s decision to stand by Sanusi as Emir comes amid controversy and legal battles surrounding the position. The court’s ruling was in response to a motion filed by Alhaji Aminu Babba-Dan’agundi, who holds the title of Sarkin Dawaki Babba, seeking to restrain the Kano State government from implementing the Kano State Emirate (Repeal) Law 2024.

The court declared that all actions carried out by the state government following the passage of the Kano Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024 were null and void. The court also held that the respondents were aware of an earlier order to maintain the status quo pending the hearing and determination of the case.

Despite the court ruling, the Kano State government remains steadfast in its support for Sanusi as Emir. The government’s decision to stand by Sanusi has sparked controversy and debate, with some supporting the move and others questioning the legality of the government’s actions.

The Kano Emirate has a rich history and is a symbol of the cultural and traditional heritage of the people of Kano. The ongoing dispute over the position of Emir highlights the complex interplay between tradition, politics, and the rule of law in Nigeria. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the Kano State government’s stance on Sanusi as Emir will be resolved.
