Court Orders Final Forfeiture of N12.18 Billion Properties Linked to Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele

In a significant development in the ongoing corruption investigation into the activities of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, the Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the final forfeiture of properties valued at over N12.18 billion. The properties, which include a mansion located in Abuja, were seized as part of the investigation.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court granted an application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which sought the forfeiture of the properties. The EFCC alleged that the properties were linked to Emefiele and were acquired with funds obtained through corrupt practices during his tenure as CBN governor.

The court’s decision comes as a significant blow to Emefiele, who has been under investigation for several months. The EFCC has been probing the former governor’s activities, focusing on allegations of corruption, financial misconduct, and abuse of office.

The seized mansion in Abuja is said to be one of the most luxurious properties in the city, and its forfeiture is seen as a significant step in the EFCC’s efforts to recover assets allegedly acquired through corrupt means.

The court’s ruling is expected to send a strong message to other public officials, warning them of the consequences of engaging in corrupt practices. It also highlights the determination of the EFCC to tackle corruption at all levels of government and recover ill-gotten assets.

As the investigation into Emefiele’s activities continues, the public eagerly awaits further developments in this high-profile corruption case. The final forfeiture of these properties marks a significant milestone in the fight against corruption in Nigeria and serves as a reminder that no one is above the law.
