Late Csoboth Goal Keeps Hungary’s Euro 2024 Hopes Alive

In a dramatic Group A match at Euro 2024, Kevin Csoboth scored a 100th-minute winner to give Hungary a 1-0 victory over Scotland, keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive. The result also meant that Scotland, who were chasing their first-ever qualification for the knockout phase of a major tournament, were eliminated from the competition.

The match was a tense affair, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances for much of the game. However, the game was overshadowed by a serious injury to Hungarian forward Barnabas Varga, who was stretchered off in the second half after a collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Despite the setback, Hungary continued to push forward and were rewarded in the dying seconds of the match when Csoboth latched onto a ball cut back across the box and fired into the net to snatch victory. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Hungarian players and fans, and left Scotland devastated.

Csoboth’s late strike means that Hungary finish third in Group A with three points, behind Germany and Switzerland. They will now have to wait to see if they will qualify for the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.

For Scotland, the defeat was a bitter end to their bid to make history at Euro 2024. Despite showing promise in their previous matches, they were unable to find the breakthrough against Hungary and were ultimately punished for their lack of cutting edge in front of goal.

The result also means that Scotland have now played 10 times against Hungary in international friendlies, with the head-to-head record between the two in Hungary’s favour.
