Video: Fire Erupts at Dangote Refinery in Lagos, Nigeria

A fire incident has occurred at the Dangote Refinery in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos State, Nigeria. The news was reported by various sources, including Instablog9ja, YabaLeftOnline, and Morris Monye, among others. The fire affected a section of the facility, and workers were seen outside the affected area, according to reports.

The Dangote Refinery, owned by the Dangote Group, is an oil refinery with a capacity to process about 650,000 barrels per day of crude oil. It was inaugurated in May 2023 and is considered the largest single-train refinery in the world.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of workers and the potential impact on the refinery’s operations. No official statement on the cause of the fire has been provided, and some users have speculated about possible negligence or sabotage.

The Dangote Refinery has faced challenges in the past, with accusations of international oil companies (IOCs) in Nigeria attempting to sabotage the facility. The Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, has accused IOCs of inflating premium prices above market rates and refusing to sell local crude to the refinery, forcing it to import crude from distant countries at significantly higher costs.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has met with crude oil producers and refinery owners in Nigeria to ensure full adherence to Domestic Crude Oil Supply Obligations (DCSO) as stated in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). However, IOCs are reportedly deliberately and willfully frustrating the refinery’s efforts to buy local crude.

The Dangote Refinery is expected to have a significant impact on Nigeria’s petroleum sector and the country’s economy. It is designed to meet 100% of Nigeria’s refined petroleum product needs and has the potential to address the country’s energy supply crisis. The refinery’s output, in combination with other refineries in Nigeria, is expected to meet the shortfall of the estimated daily consumption of 72 million litres of petrol.

The establishment of the Dangote Refinery is also likely to help reduce the cost of production for industries that rely on petroleum products such as diesel to power their operations. However, the recent fire incident at the refinery has raised concerns about its future and the potential impact on Nigeria’s economy.
