Marcos Alonso Leaves FC Barcelona as Contract Expires

FC Barcelona has officially confirmed that defender Marcos Alonso will not continue with the club. The Spanish international’s contract expired on June 30, 2024, and the club has publicly expressed their gratitude for his commitment and dedication during his time with the team.

Alonso joined Barcelona as a free agent in September 2022 after terminating his contract with Chelsea. His initial contract only tied him to Barcelona until the end of this season, but the club and the player had reached an agreement to extend his contract until 2024. However, the club has now confirmed that Alonso will not be continuing with the team.

The 32-year-old Alonso made 45 appearances for Barcelona, scoring three goals. He was part of a major overhaul of Barcelona’s squad last summer made possible by the club selling some of its future television rights and other assets.

Alongside Alonso, Barcelona also confirmed that loan deals for Portuguese players João Félix and João Cancelo have ended, and both players will return to their respective clubs. The club has placed on record their appreciation for the commitment and dedication of Alonso, Félix, and Cancelo, and wishes them all the best and every success in the future.

Alonso, who started his career at Real Madrid, had spells with Bolton Wanderers, Fiorentina, and Sunderland before joining Chelsea in 2016. He made over 200 appearances for the London club, winning a Champions League and a Premier League title during his six-year stay.

The departure of Alonso, Félix, and Cancelo marks a significant change in Barcelona’s squad, and the club will now look to replace them in the upcoming transfer window.
