EFCC Warns Against Planned Protest Over Its Operations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a warning to the public about a planned protest against its operations. The agency stated that a “shadowy group” is behind the initiative, which is aimed at resisting the operational activities of the anti-graft commission, especially in areas relating to cybercrime.

In a statement released by the EFCC, the agency said that parents and guardians should warn their wards not to be part of the planned protest. The statement also cautioned the public against collaborating with the shadowy group, which it accused of attempting to instigate a protest against the Commission.

The warning comes after massive calls for a nationwide protest against the EFCC on social media following illegal raids carried out by its personnel. The agency has been accused of targeting young Nigerians and acting outside its jurisdiction.

The EFCC’s warning has sparked a debate on social media, with many criticizing the agency’s approach. Some have called for the EFCC to focus on addressing corruption among politicians rather than targeting young Nigerians.

The agency’s warning also comes at a time when there have been protests in Delta State against the EFCC’s operations. Sixteen suspects were arrested by security agents over the violent protests by alleged internet fraudsters in parts of Delta State. The protesting youths took over major roads in Ughelli, Warri, and other areas, chanting “End EFCC Now.”

The protests have led to traffic gridlock and the burning of 15 trucks and some national assets in the affected areas. The Ughelli North Local Government has imposed a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew in the town.

The EFCC’s warning against the planned protest has been met with mixed reactions. While some have criticized the agency’s approach, others have called for the EFCC to focus on addressing corruption among politicians rather than targeting young Nigerians.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the planned protest will go ahead and what the response from the EFCC and other authorities will be.
