The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are set to benefit from the new minimum wage once the ongoing negotiations are completed, according to the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed.

During his visit to the NYSC orientation camp in Ogun State, General Ahmed stated that it is expected that corps members will benefit from the minimum wage once it is approved. However, he did not specify when this increase will take effect.

The NYSC spokesperson, Eddy Megwa, advised journalists to uphold tenets of verification in their reportage “so as not to incite unnecessary apprehension among the scheme’s stakeholders.”

Nigerians who complete bachelor’s degrees or its equivalent under the age of 30 are mandated by law to participate in the one-year NYSC scheme.

The NYSC DG’s comments come amidst reports that the Nigerian government is planning to reform the NYSC to make it a revenue-generating agency. The Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, stated that the reforms will transform the NYSC into a revenue-generating scheme and agency, preparing corps members for the job market and to be employers of labour through entrepreneurship.

The minister also disclosed that the federal government has halted NYSC deployments in “unsafe states” following a series of abductions targeting corps members during their mandatory service.

As the negotiations on the new minimum wage continue, corps members and other stakeholders eagerly await the outcome and the potential increase in their monthly allowance.
