In a surprising turn of events, the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resubmit the 2024 budget. This directive came during the first session of the pro-Wike House on Monday, after a break of several months.

The ultimatum follows a series of political tensions in the state, with Governor Fubara previously presenting the N800 billion 2024 budget to a four-man State House of Assembly led by his then-Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie. The budget was passed by the lawmakers loyal to Fubara and subsequently signed into law by the governor.

Political Drama in Rivers State: Fubara Given 7-Day Ultimatum to Resubmit 2024 Budget

However, the Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Amaewhule, has now demanded that Fubara resubmit the budget for review. The move comes amidst ongoing political drama in the state, with tensions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, continuing to escalate.

The situation has been further complicated by the Court of Appeal’s recent ruling, which recognized the lawmakers loyal to Wike as legitimate members of the House. The court also nullified the presentation and passage of the Rivers 2024 budget by the four-man House of Assembly led by Ehie.

In response to the court’s decision, the Rivers elders, led by Chief Arabs Sara-Igbe and nine others, have taken legal action, seeking to nullify the resolutions made during a meeting between Fubara, Wike, and lawyers, which was presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

The political drama in Rivers State shows no signs of abating, with the state’s political landscape becoming increasingly complex and fraught with tension. As the seven-day ultimatum approaches, all eyes will be on Governor Fubara to see whether he complies with the Assembly’s demands or chooses to take a different course of action.
