CJN To Swear In New Supreme Court Justice On Monday

On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will swear in 22 newly appointed Justices of the Court of Appeal. Among the appointees is Eberechi Suzette Wike, the wife of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Supreme Court, marking a significant milestone for the judiciary and the nation’s legal system. The CJN will also inaugurate 12 legal practitioners as judges of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on the same day.

The appointment of Wike’s wife, Eberechi Suzette Nyesom-Wike, from Rivers State, along with the other 21 new justices, was approved by the President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice M.B Dongban-Mensem, and forwarded to the CJN for swearing-in.

Justice Ariwoola, who heads both the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) and the National Judicial Council (NJC), will officiate the ceremony.

The appointment of Wike’s wife to the Court of Appeal has generated significant interest and discussion in the legal community and among the general public. Some have praised the appointment as a recognition of her legal expertise and experience, while others have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest.

In addition to Wike’s wife, the other new justices of the Court of Appeal include:

  • Asma’u Akanbi-Yusuf from Kwara State
  • Lesley Nkesi Belema Wike from Rivers State
  • … (other appointees)

The swearing-in of the new justices is expected to strengthen the Court of Appeal and enhance the administration of justice in Nigeria.
