UAE Lifts Visa Ban on Nigerians: New Conditions Apply

Wike Receives UAE Ambassador Seeks Reversal Of Visa Ban On Nigerians

After a diplomatic spat that lasted nearly two years, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has finally lifted its visa ban on Nigerian passport holders. The ban, which was imposed in October 2022, has now been lifted, allowing Nigerians to once again apply for UAE visas. However, the UAE has introduced new conditions that applicants must meet before they can obtain a visa.

Updated Conditions for Nigerian Applicants

According to the UAE’s Document Verification Hub, Nigerian passport holders must first obtain a Document Verification Number (DVN) before applying for a visa. The DVN costs a non-refundable N640,000 (approximately $1,200) excluding VAT for each application. This fee does not include the visa fee itself, which must be paid separately.

In addition to obtaining a DVN, Nigerian applicants must also provide a six-month bank statement showing a minimum balance of $10,000. This requirement is likely intended to ensure that applicants have sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay in the UAE.

Furthermore, applicants must show evidence of booked round-trip flight tickets and a confirmed and paid hotel booking. These requirements are likely intended to ensure that applicants have concrete travel plans and are not planning to overstay their visa.

Mixed Reactions from Nigerians

The new conditions have sparked a mixed reaction from Nigerians. While some are relieved that the visa ban has been lifted and are eager to apply for a UAE visa, others are concerned about the high cost and stringent requirements.

“How many Nigerians have a balance of $10k causally?” tweeted one X user, questioning the authenticity of the UAE’s intentions.

A Step in the Right Direction

Despite the concerns, the lifting of the visa ban is a positive development for both Nigeria and the UAE. The resumption of visa issuance will allow Nigerians to once again visit the UAE for business, tourism, and other purposes.

“This agreement represents a positive step towards strengthening diplomatic relations and enhancing travel opportunities between Nigeria and the UAE,” said a statement from the Nigerian government.

As Nigerians begin to apply for UAE visas under the new conditions, it remains to be seen how the process will unfold and whether the requirements will be a barrier to entry for some applicants.
