On August 1st, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will not be available for any protests, according to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The day has been set aside for the chairmen of the six Area Councils of the FCT to give out certificates of recognition to their traditional rulers.

“That is the day FCT has set aside for the entire area councils to jubilate and give out certificates of recognition to their traditional rulers,” said Minister Wike. He emphasized that while people have the right to protest or demonstrate, such rights must be done within the ambit of the law.

The minister’s warning comes amid reports of a planned nationwide protest against economic hardship scheduled for August 1st. However, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has clarified that it will not participate in the protest. TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, emphasized that it is the constitutional right of any Nigerian to protest grievances and urged the police and other security agencies not to intimidate those participating, as it is their civic right.

Minister Wike described the current hunger and suffering as temporary and assured Nigerians that the ongoing reforms and policies would soon yield the desired results. He called on Nigerians to be patient with the current administration and give President Bola Tinubu ample time to solve the rot in the country.

The minister also addressed the needs of residents in Saburi, a community in the FCT, and assured them of the government’s commitment to meeting their needs. He mentioned ongoing projects, such as the construction of a police station and health facility, as well as the completion of a road project in the community.

As August 1st approaches, it remains to be seen how the planned protest and the government’s response will unfold. However, Minister Wike’s warning has made it clear that Abuja will not be available for any protests on that day, as it has been set aside for honoring the traditional rulers of the FCT.
