Kano Youths Defy Tinubu’s Speech, Continue Protests for Fourth Day
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s televised address urging an end to the ongoing nationwide protests against economic hardship, the determined youths of Kano have continued their demonstrations for the fourth consecutive day.
The protests, which began on August 1, 2024, were sparked by the rising cost of living and other economic challenges faced by Nigerians. President Tinubu’s speech, in which he expressed his condolences for the lives lost during the protests and called for an end to violence, did little to dissuade the Kano youths from making their voices heard.
In his address, President Tinubu highlighted the economic reforms his administration has undertaken, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the abolition of multiple foreign exchange systems. He also pointed to fiscal improvements, such as the doubling of aggregate government revenues to over 9.1 trillion Naira in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
However, the Kano youths remain unconvinced, taking to the streets with placards and chants, demanding an end to what they perceive as bad governance. The protests have been largely peaceful, although there have been reports of some looting and vandalism in the state.
The situation in Kano has drawn attention from across the country, with many expressing solidarity with the protesters. The hashtag #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria has been trending on social media, with users sharing photos and videos of the demonstrations.
As the protests continue, it remains to be seen whether the government will take further steps to address the concerns of the Kano youths and other Nigerians who have taken to the streets. The situation is a reminder of the power of grassroots movements to hold governments accountable and demand change.
