President Tinubu Calls for End to #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Protests

Tinubu Meets APC Governors Amid Nationwide Protest Plans

In a televised address on Sunday, August 4, 2024, President Bola Tinubu urged protesters to suspend the ongoing nationwide demonstrations against the rising cost of living and hunger in Nigeria. The protests, which began on Thursday, August 1, have led to the loss of lives and property in several parts of the country.

President Tinubu expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the protests and called for an immediate end to the violence. He acknowledged the grievances of the protesters and assured them that his administration is committed to addressing their concerns.

“I understand the pain and frustration that drive these protests, and I want to assure you that our government is committed to listening and addressing the concerns of our citizens,” he stated.

The President also highlighted the economic progress his government has made, stating, “Aggregate government revenues have more than doubled, hitting over N9.1 trillion in the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023.”

President Tinubu called for dialogue and urged protesters to create room for constructive engagement. He emphasized the need for all citizens to work together in reshaping the country’s common destiny.

“The nation requires all hands on deck and needs all citizens, regardless of age, party, tribe, religion or other divides, to work together in reshaping its common destiny,” he said.

The President’s speech comes amidst reports of at least 17 people being killed by security agents during the protests. The demonstrations have been largely peaceful, but some instances of violence and destruction of property have been reported.

The government has also secured a court order restricting the protests to three locations in Lagos and closing by 6pm.

The President’s appeal to suspend the protests has been met with mixed reactions on social media, with some expressing support and patience, while others criticized him for allegedly failing to address fundamental issues.

As the nation grapples with the ongoing protests, President Tinubu’s call for dialogue and an end to violence signals a potential turning point in the country’s struggle for good governance.
