President Bola Tinubu has approved a sum of N108 billion to be distributed among the 36 states of Nigeria to help combat flooding and erosion, which are significant environmental challenges facing various parts of the country. This initiative allocates N3 billion to each state, aiming to bolster local efforts in managing and mitigating the impacts of these natural disasters.
This decision was announced by Vice President Kashim Shettima, highlighting the administration’s commitment to addressing these issues, especially in light of recent flooding events described as a “national calamity” in some regions like Maiduguri. The move reflects a collaborative approach between the federal government and state governments to tackle environmental degradation, with an emphasis on immediate action and long-term solutions.
The allocation of funds comes at a time when many states are experiencing severe flooding, particularly in the North, and erosion, notably in the Southeast and other parts of Nigeria. This financial support is intended to aid in the construction of flood control measures, erosion control projects, and to provide relief to affected communities, thereby preventing further loss of property and life, and supporting the recovery of affected areas.
This initiative has been met with a positive response from various quarters, including state officials and legislative leaders, who have pledged further support and cooperation to ensure the effective use of these funds. The gesture is seen as part of a broader strategy to enhance disaster management and environmental protection across Nigeria, indicating a proactive stance by the Tinubu administration towards national environmental challenges.
