The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has confirmed that there are no legal obstacles preventing the local government council elections scheduled for October 5, 2024, from proceeding as planned. This assurance comes from Retired Justice Enebeli, the Chairman of RSIEC, who emphasized that the elections are set to occur in all 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State. The decision to go ahead with the elections was further supported by references to the state’s electoral law and a recent Supreme Court judgement, which together empower RSIEC to conduct these elections without any current judicial impediments.

RSIEC’s readiness for the polls was highlighted during a training session for electoral staff, where Justice Enebeli underscored the commission’s commitment to ensuring the elections are free, fair, credible, and free from violence. This statement not only reaffirms the date but also addresses any public or political concerns regarding potential delays or cancellations due to litigation.

The information available up to September 26, 2024, does not indicate any ongoing litigation that would hinder the conduct of these council polls. Thus, according to RSIEC, the local government elections in Rivers State are on course for October 5, 2024.
