Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a landslide victory in the Ondo State governorship election, sweeping all 18 local government areas of the state. This impressive win solidifies his position as the next governor of Ondo State.
Aiyedatiwa defeated several opponents, including:
- Falaiye Ajibola of the Accord Party
- Akinuli Omolere of the Action Alliance
- Olatunji Popoola of the All Progressives Grand Alliance
- Olorunfemi Ayodele of the Labour Party
- Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Aiyedatiwa the winner after the completion of the collation exercise on Sunday, November 17, 2024. This announcement marks a significant milestone in Ondo State’s political landscape.
APC Leads In 15 LGAs Announced So Far, Collation Resumes At 12 Noon
With the total of 15 LGAs announced so far, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is maintaining a strong lead in all, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) coming second.
The collation officer, Prof Olayemi Akinwunmi, who announced the recess, said it is to allow for the arrival of results from the remaining local governments which he said are very far from Akure, the capital city.
Collation Of Ondo Election Result To Commence 11pm – INEC
INEC National Commissioner, Prof Kunle Ajayi, disclosed this to Channels Television in Akure, the Ondo State capital while giving update on the electoral body’s plans.
He said once the collation begins at the State Collation Centre, the exercise wouldn’t end until an eventual winner is declared.
“By exactly 11 pm this evening, we are going to start the state collation and once we start, it will be a marathon. Until we declare the winner, we won’t leave here,”Ajayi said.
“I can assure you that until we declare the winner, we won’t leave here. We will wait until the last local government before we leave.”
INEC Uploads 95.32% Of Results On IReV
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uploaded 95.32% of the results from the Ondo State governorship election to its Result Viewing Portal.
Results from 3,749 polling unit out of 3,933 where the election took place have been made available online as of 8:34 pm on Saturday.
Though 18 political parties participated in the election, incumbent governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and former deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi are seen as the main contenders.
While Aiyedatiwa ran on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajayi ran on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
PDP Governorship candidate Ajayi wins polling unit
The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Agboola Ajayi has won his polling unit.
Agboola who voted at at Apoi Ward II, Unit 004 in Kiribo, Ese Odo Council Area of the state on Saturday, polled 194 votes to defeat his main rival, Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress who scored 003 votes.
Police Restrict Unauthorised Movement Of Persons In Collation Centres
The Force also wants police operatives deployed for election security to restrict any unauthorized movement of persons in and out of the collation centres.
This charge was given by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Ondo State Gubernatorial Elections, DIG Sylvester Abiodun Alabi.
Shortly after the voting ended in the Sunshine State, Alabi “conducted a series of rigorous inspections of polling units and collation centres aimed at ensuring the integrity and transparency of the electoral process,” Force spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said.
Voting Ends In Ondo Governorship Election, Sorting And Counting Begin
In some parts of the state, the exercise ended around 2:30 pm with sorting and counting of votes already in process.
However, voters who arrived at the polling units but have yet to cast their ballots before that time will be allowed to do so.
The election began around 8 am in the 3,933 polling units of the South-West state. Materials for the exercise arrived in some places as early as 6 am with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ramping up preparations for the poll.
PDP Governorship Candidates Faults Ondo Election
Agboola has faulted the process. The PDP candidate alleged that the slow pace of the exercise was an attempt by INEC to rig the governorship poll.
“The system is not perfect, things are not working,” the PDP candidate said after voting. It took them more than 10 minutes to capture me who is the candidate of the PDP here. All of us are here. You can see the drama. There are a lot of complaints here and there,” the PDP candidate said.
“If INEC cannot successfully organise an election in one state, then you must know that we are running into anarchy.
“I think it’s deliberate on the part of INEC and the part of the REC and we have said severally that we don’t trust Barr. Oluwatoyin Babalola (REC); that this woman cannot be fair.
“The system is compromised and I have had a series of calls today. People are complaining about vote buying and the BVAS is not working. It is a very shameful exercise and I think Nigerians should just call on the chairman of the electoral commission Prof Mahmood Yakubu. If you cannot do the job, please just honourably resign. He should resign. This is embarrassing. It [election] is totally compromised.”
Ondo Election: Deputy governor, Adelami casts his vote, urges voters to turnout
Ondo state deputy governor, Dr Olayide Adelami, has Just voted at his Igboroko 2, Ward 3 Unit 16 in Owo local government area.
At about 9:40am, Dr Adelami joined a queue of voters waiting to be accredited and thereafter was in line alongside members of his immediate family to cast his vote.
Speaking with newsmen after exercising his civic duty, the deputy governor asked residents of Owo and the people of the state to come out to vote.
“Your vote is your power. I urge you all to come out to vote. In so doing, you will be contributing to the promotion of good governance and a greater Ondo state” Adelami charged.

Police Prepare Drone Deployment Team For Ondo Election
The police authorities are set to deploy drones for surveillance during the Ondo State governorship election slated for Saturday, November 16, 2024.
On Friday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, in charge of the Nigerian Police Force monitoring team, prepared a drone deployment team to monitor the exercise.
Security operatives have indicated readiness to partner with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the off-cycle election.
A total number of 43,157 security personnel have been deployed for the election.
Police Deploy 34,000 Men, Restrict Movement
The Nigeria Police has deployed about 34,000 operatives for the Ondo State governorship election billed for Saturday, November 16, 2024.
Abiodun Alabi, the Deputy Inspector General of Police Coordinating Election Security, disclosed this to Channels Television’s Politics Today in Akure on Friday.
He also revealed that measures have been taken to avoid infiltration of thugs or unauthorised persons during the off-cycle poll.
Alabi explained that all the 3,933 polling units of the state would be well covered, stressing that police operatives have been deployed across the wards and local government areas.

The Court of Appeal, in its ruling under reference number CA/ABJ/CV/1172/2024, determined that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction to make such a ruling.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has replaced the Labour Party candidate, Olusola Ebiseni with Dr. Olorunfemi Ayodele Festus.
INEC disclosed this in a statement released on its official X account on Friday in compliance with the ruling by the Court of Appeal.
“In obedience to the court order, the Commission has restored Olorunfemi Ayodele Festus, whose name was first published as the Labour Party candidate for the 2024 Ondo State Governorship election and uploaded same to our website for public information,” INEC said.
Earlier, a Court of Appeal in Abuja struck out a judgment by the Federal High Court, which had ordered INEC to accept Olusola Ebiseni as the Labour Party’s candidate.
The Federal High Court, in a ruling delivered on September 27, 2024, had directed INEC to recognise Ebiseni for the upcoming election.
