Born on May 3, 1946, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Gumbel grew up on Chicago’s South Side. He developed a passion for sports at an early age and went on to graduate from Loras College with a degree in English. Gumbel began his broadcasting career at WMAQ-TV in Chicago, where he worked as a sports anchor and reporter.
