FORMER U.S. PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER PASSES AWAY AT 100
Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the incredible age of 100. He died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family.
Carter’s legacy is marked by his commitment to peace, human rights, and humanitarian work. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his decades-long efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts and promote democracy and human rights.
As President, Carter brokered the historic Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, a peace treaty that has endured to this day. He also prioritized human rights, often putting him at odds with other world leaders.
“Jimmy Carter was a remarkable individual who dedicated his life to public service and the pursuit of peace,” said former President Bill Clinton. “His commitment to human rights and democracy inspired countless people around the world.”
After leaving office, Carter continued to work tirelessly for peace and human rights through the Carter Center, which he founded with his wife Rosalynn. The center has monitored elections, promoted democracy, and worked to eradicate diseases such as Guinea worm disease and river blindness.
Carter also remained committed to his Christian faith, teaching scripture at his local church until 2020. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life and informed his commitment to social justice and human rights.
“Jimmy Carter was a man of deep faith and conviction,” said Reverend Billy Graham’s son, Franklin Graham. “He lived out his faith in his public life and inspired countless people to do the same.”
Carter is survived by his children, Jack, Donnell, James Earl, and Amy; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn.
“Jimmy Carter was a loving husband, father, and grandfather,” said Rosalynn Carter in a statement. “He was a kind and compassionate person who always put others before himself. We will miss him dearly, but we take comfort in the knowledge that his legacy will live on.”
The Carter family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Carter Center.
As news of Carter’s passing spread, tributes poured in from around the world. World leaders, politicians, and ordinary citizens all remembered Carter as a champion of peace, human rights, and democracy.
“Jimmy Carter was a true statesman and a champion of human rights,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. “His legacy will continue to inspire us all to work towards a more just and peaceful world.”
Carter’s funeral will be held at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, on January 3, 2025. He will be buried on the grounds of the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site.
As the world says goodbye to Jimmy Carter, we remember his remarkable life and legacy. He was a true leader, a champion of peace and human rights, and an inspiration to us all.
