FUBARA’S BUDGET PRESENTATION TO 4 HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY MEMBERS IS ILLEGAL, SAYS TONY OKOCHA
The Rivers State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tony Okocha, has strongly condemned Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s budget presentation to a 5-member House of Assembly, describing it as illegal and a blatant disregard for the rule of law.
According to Okocha, the presentation violates court rulings and established governance protocols, which mandate that budgets must be presented to the legislative arm led by Martins Amaewhule, recognized by law.
Okocha emphasized that the January 2024 ruling by Justice Omotosho explicitly stated that the budget must be presented to the legislative arm led by Amaewhule. He criticized Governor Fubara’s actions, stating that presenting the budget to only 5 members of the Assembly, instead of the full 30 members, demonstrates a blatant disregard for the rule of law and judicial pronouncements.
“The governor’s actions are not only illegal but also a clear attempt to undermine the authority of the judiciary and the legislative arm of government,” Okocha said. “We will not stand idly by while the governor continues to disregard the rule of law and violate the principles of democracy.”
Okocha also expressed concerns about escalating political tensions in Rivers State, accusing Governor Fubara of fueling hostilities rather than promoting reconciliation. He noted that 27 Assembly members had reaffirmed their allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), contrary to earlier expectations.
“The governor’s actions are not only divisive but also destructive to the fabric of our society,” Okocha said. “We urge the governor to respect the rule of law, engage in constructive dialogue, and work towards promoting peace and stability in Rivers State.”
The APC chairman called on the people of Rivers State to remain vigilant and demand accountability from their elected officials. He assured that the APC would continue to stand up for the rights of the people and defend the principles of democracy.
“We will not be intimidated or silenced by the governor’s actions,” Okocha said. “We will continue to speak out against injustice and promote the values of democracy, transparency, and accountability.”
