The Rivers State Government has issued a statement clarifying the status of its case before the Supreme Court. According to Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the case challenging the leadership of the State House of Assembly and the membership of the members who defected in December 2023 is still pending before the Supreme Court.

SUPREME COURT DECISION

On Monday, February 10, 2025, the Supreme Court made a decision regarding the Appeal Court Judgement that Governor Fubara should re-present the 2024 budget before the Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly. However, Ehie explained that since the 2024 budget has been spent, Governor Fubara withdrew his appeal against the judgement, considering it a mere academic exercise.

NO BEARING ON DEFECTED MEMBERS’ SEATS

Ehie emphasized that the withdrawn appeal has no bearing on the seats of Martin Chike Amaewhule and his 26 friends in the Rivers State House of Assembly, who defected from PDP to APC in December 2023. The government urged the public not to be misled by propaganda from Amaewhule and his associates.

GOVERNMENT’S POSITION

The Rivers State Government maintained that its case challenging the leadership of the State House of Assembly and the membership of the defected members is still before the Supreme Court. The government assured the public that it will continue to pursue justice and uphold the rule of law.

PUBLIC WARNING

The government warned the public to be cautious of misinformation and propaganda from Amaewhule and his associates. Ehie stated that the government will not be distracted by false claims and will remain focused on delivering good governance to the people of Rivers State.
