Hon Martin Led Rivers State House of Assembly Condemns Governor Fubara’s Appointments

The Rivers State House of Assembly has condemned Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s recent appointments, describing them as contemptuous and illegal. The Assembly’s dissatisfaction stems from Fubara’s disregard for court judgments, state laws, and the Nigerian Constitution.
At its 122nd legislative sitting, the Majority Leader, Hon. Major Jack, brought attention to the governor’s purported appointments and swearing-in of individuals as chairmen and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission and the Rivers State Local Government Service Commission. The House deemed these individuals impostors.
Hon. Members pointed out that the Governor’s actions have dragged decency to the mud, as the House did not receive any letter from the Governor nor screen and confirm any individuals for such positions, in line with the extant laws guiding such appointments.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule emphasized that Fubara’s actions defy state laws and the Court of Appeal’s judgment, which affirmed Amaewhule as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The Supreme Court’s dismissal of Fubara’s appeal further solidifies the Court of Appeal’s judgment.
Amaewhule wondered why Governor Fubara would continue to disregard the law, knowing that such acts constitute misconduct and would not go unrecorded. The Speaker stressed that the House will not tolerate such contemptuous behavior.
In response, the House voted to direct the Clerk of the Assembly to publish a disclaimer, denouncing the governor’s actions as illegal and questionable. This move aims to correct the public record and assert the Assembly’s authority.
The Rivers State House of Assembly has made it clear that it will not stand idly by while the governor disregards the law and undermines the state’s institutions. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Governor Fubara will respond to the Assembly’s condemnation.
