Senate Refers Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to Ethics Committee Over Seating Dispute

The Nigerian Senate has taken a decisive step in addressing a recent controversy involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, referring her to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for disciplinary review.
The decision follows a heated argument between Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on February 20. The dispute arose when Akpoti-Uduaghan discovered that her seat had been changed without her consent, prompting a shouting match with the Senate President.
The Senate unanimously voted to refer the matter to the ethics committee, which will investigate the incident and report back within two weeks. Chaired by Senator Neda Imaseun, the committee will review the circumstances surrounding the altercation and determine the appropriate course of action.
In a statement, Senate spokesperson Senator Yemi Adaramodu condemned Akpoti-Uduaghan’s behavior, describing it as “extreme intransigence.” He emphasized the importance of upholding parliamentary decorum and adherence to established rules.
“The Senate is a revered institution, and we must maintain the highest standards of behavior and decorum,” Adaramodu said. “We cannot tolerate any behavior that undermines the integrity of the Senate.”
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also weighed in on the matter, stating that the chamber is committed to maintaining order and integrity. “Integrity is non-negotiable in this chamber,” Bamidele said. “We must uphold the highest standards of behavior and ensure that our actions reflect the dignity of the Senate.”
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, suggested that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s unfamiliarity with Senate procedures may have contributed to the altercation. He reminded lawmakers of the need for decorum during sittings and emphasized the importance of respecting the rules and traditions of the Senate.
The referral of Akpoti-Uduaghan to the ethics committee marks a significant step in addressing the controversy and upholding the integrity of the Senate. The committee’s findings and recommendations will be eagerly awaited, as the Senate seeks to maintain the highest standards of behavior and decorum.
