INEC Nigeria has confirmed that the petition for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, doesn’t meet the requirements outlined in Section 69(a) of the Constitution. However, I found that INEC did receive the contact details of the petitioners’ representatives, which was a crucial step in the recall process.

It’s worth noting that the recall petition was initiated due to allegations of “gross misconduct” against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was suspended from the Senate on March 6. The petition cited claims of abuse of office and a consistent pattern of deceit.

Despite the petition not meeting the constitutional requirements, INEC has assured transparency throughout the process. They’ll conduct a verification exercise to confirm whether the petition has been signed by more than 50% of registered voters in the Kogi Central Constituency.
