Protests Erupt in Rivers State Over Governance Issues

Protests erupted in Rivers State, with members of the Take It Back Movement demanding good governance and the return of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The demonstration at Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt turned chaotic as police fired teargas, chasing and beating protesters, including journalists.
Protesters’ Grievances
The protesters had several grievances, including:
- Repeal of Cybercrime Act: Protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the repeal, citing concerns about online freedom and security.
- Suspension of Governor Fubara: Demonstrators felt the suspension was unconstitutional and demanded his return to office.
- Lack of Good Governance: Protesters emphasized the need for effective leadership and accountability in Rivers State.
The police had advised against the protest, citing National Police Day celebrations. Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi described the protest as “ill-timed” and “mischievous,” potentially damaging the Nigeria Police’s image.
The situation escalated when police officers attempted to disperse the protesters, leading to a confrontation. The officers fired teargas, chasing and beating some of the protesters, including journalists covering the event.
Similar demonstrations are happening in Lagos, Oyo, and other states, with citizens demanding better governance and accountability. The protests highlight growing concerns about governance issues across Nigeria.
Despite the police’s attempts to disperse them, the protesters remained determined to express their grievances. One of the protesters stated, “We are not here for violence. We are here to demand that our governor comes back to office and lead us appropriately.”
The protests in Rivers State and other parts of Nigeria underscore the need for effective governance and accountability. The government must address the concerns of its citizens to prevent further unrest and ensure stability in the country.
