Bobrisky’s Prison Fine U-Turn: N200K or N50K?
Bobrisky, a Nigerian crossdresser and social media personality, was recently sentenced to six months in prison without the option of a fine for abusing the Naira, specifically for spraying new Naira notes at a social event. This sentence was handed down by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos on April 12, 2024. Bobrisky was charged under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007 for tampering with the Naira by spraying a total sum of N400,000 at IMAX Circle Mall, Lekki on March 24, 2024, as well as other counts including the abuse of other sums of money.
Initially, Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the charges and requested the court to be lenient, claiming he was unaware of the laws against Naira abuse and promising to educate his followers about it. However, the court did not grant him leniency and ruled for a six-month imprisonment without the option of a fine.
After the sentencing, Bobrisky appealed against the sentence, requesting the court to reconsider and allow him to pay a fine of ₦50,000 for each count instead. This appeal came after Bobrisky had already been imprisoned and was a bid to avoid serving the full six-month jail term.
The appeal has sparked further discussions and debates on social media, with many people following the case closely and expressing their opinions on the matter. Bobrisky’s case has also brought attention to the issue of Naira abuse and the consequences that can follow such actions.
As of now, the final decision regarding Bobrisky’s appeal and whether the court will accept the offer of a ₦50,000 fine for each count in lieu of imprisonment remains to be seen. The outcome will be closely watched by the public and could have significant implications for how similar cases are handled in the future.
