Pro-Fubara Rivers Assembly Lawmakers To Screen Commissioner Nominee

Jumbo Elected Rivers Speaker Fubara Ally Takes Charge

The political landscape in Rivers State has been quite turbulent lately. On May 13, 2024, the Rivers State House of Assembly, loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, was set to commence the screening process for a commissioner nominee, Danagogo Iboroma. This decision comes amidst a backdrop of political turmoil and factional divisions within the state’s political arena.

Governor Fubara, who has been at the center of a political crisis involving his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has faced significant opposition. The crisis has seen the state’s Assembly split into factions, with one supporting Fubara and another aligning with Wike. This division has led to several contentious actions, including the demolition of the state Assembly complex and the appointment of new commissioners.

On January 17, 2024, the Assembly, led by Victor Oko-Jumbo as Speaker, invited nine former commissioners who had resigned in the heat of the crisis for fresh screening as commissioners. This move was part of an eight-point resolution reached at a mediation meeting in Abuja headed by President Bola Tinubu.

The screening of the commissioner-designate, Danagogo Iboroma, is scheduled for Monday, May 15, 2024. This event is significant as it marks a critical step in Governor Fubara’s administration’s attempt to solidify its governance structure amidst the ongoing political turmoil.

The political crisis in Rivers State has also seen the involvement of federal lawmakers and leaders, with visits to the state to show support for either faction. The situation remains fluid, with tensions high and the potential for further escalation.

As of now, the screening of Danagogo Iboroma is set to proceed, with the Fubara-loyal faction of the Assembly taking a step towards consolidating their governance structure. However, the broader political crisis in the state remains unresolved, and the situation is subject to rapid change.
