Kano Residents Protest Over The Removal of Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano

Kano residents have taken to the streets in protest following the removal of Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano. The protests were sparked by the Kano State House of Assembly’s decision to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law 2019, which had divided the Kano emirate into five jurisdictions and led to the dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2020. Incumbent Governor Abba Yusuf signed a new law repealing the Emirate Council Law 2019, which was used by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to create four additional Emirates in the state.

This decision by Governor Yusuf led to the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano. Sanusi was dethroned in 2020 by the then-Governor Ganduje over certain differences. The protests are a response to the removal of Bayero and the reinstatement of Sanusi, with demonstrators demanding the removal of Sanusi and the reinstatement of Bayero as the Emir of Kano.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Bayero has been ordered arrested by the governor, and he is currently residing in a palace in Nassarawa Local Government Area. The protests have added to the tension in the region, with many fearing a further escalation of the situation.

The developments have also sparked concerns about the potential for political instability and the impact on the traditional hierarchies in the state. The protests are a clear indication of the deep-seated tensions and divisions within the region over the leadership of the historic Kano Emirate.
