The political crisis in Rivers State, which has been a significant point of contention for several months, has been declared over by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This announcement came during a speech given at the Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt, where the Governor was marking one year in office. Governor Fubara stated that the worst of the political crisis in the state is over, signaling a potential end to a period marked by tension and conflict.

The crisis in Rivers State had its roots in a power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, which escalated into a full-blown political crisis. The conflict saw the state’s House of Assembly complex burnt down, and 27 lawmakers defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This political upheaval led to a series of events, including the presentation of the 2024 budget to a fraction of the Assembly, the resignation of nine members of the state cabinet, and a series of legal and political maneuvers aimed at resolving the crisis.

The resolution of the crisis was aided by a meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu, which was attended by key figures from both sides of the political divide. The meeting resulted in an eight-point resolution that outlined steps to restore peace and stability in the region. Key among these resolutions was the withdrawal of all court cases related to the crisis, the recognition of the leadership of the House, and the resubmission of the 2024 budget to the full House.

Despite the resolution, there have been lingering issues, such as a local council chairman vowing not to vacate his office, indicating that the road to full resolution might still have some bumps. However, Governor Fubara’s declaration that the worst of the crisis is over is a significant step towards restoring normalcy and stability in Rivers State.

As the state moves forward, the focus will likely shift towards addressing the underlying issues that led to the crisis and ensuring that the resolutions are fully implemented. The political leadership, along with the citizens of Rivers State, will be looking to heal the divisions and work towards a more united and prosperous future.
