Arsenal Set to Finalize Deal for Bologna Defender Riccardo Calafiori
Arsenal Football Club is on the verge of completing a deal for Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori. The transfer fee is expected to be worth a combined £42.1 million, with Bologna holding out for that figure. The deal is said to be close, with Calafiori himself reportedly asking the Bologna board to let him leave and fulfill his dream of joining Arsenal.
Calafiori, a 22-year-old Italian international, has been a standout performer for Bologna, helping the club to a top-four finish in Serie A and a return to the Champions League. He also impressed at Euro 2024, despite Italy’s early exit in the tournament.
The defender’s performances have attracted the interest of several top clubs, including Juventus and Real Madrid. However, Calafiori has his heart set on a move to Arsenal, and has reportedly given his word to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
The deal has been complicated by the fact that Bologna must also agree terms with FC Basel, Calafiori’s former club, on the payment structure of the sell-on clause. Basel stand to make 50% of Bologna’s profit on any deal.
Once the deal is finalized, Calafiori is expected to undergo a medical and sign his Arsenal contract next week.
The transfer window for the Premier League closes on August 30th at 11pm UK time.
