Vice President Kashim Shettima of Nigeria has departed Abuja for the United States to attend the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as of September 21, 2024. His attendance is at the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, allowing the President to focus on domestic issues, including managing the aftermath of recent severe floods in parts of Nigeria. During the session, which runs from September 24 to 28, 2024, VP Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, engage in key meetings, and participate in bilateral discussions, under the theme “Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations.” This event marks an important diplomatic engagement for Nigeria on the global stage, addressing issues like climate change, poverty, and sustainable development.
