Arewa Youths Dissatisfied with Rivers LG Polls, Call on FG to Withhold Funds

Abuja, Nigeria – The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the Rivers State Local Government polls, urging the Federal Government to withhold funds allocated to the state.
Concerns Over Electoral Process
In a statement signed by its National President, Yerima Shettima, the AYCF cited irregularities and alleged manipulation of the electoral process. Shettima stated:
“The Rivers State Local Government elections were marred by widespread irregularities, violence, and intimidation. We cannot allow such blatant disregard for democratic principles to stand.”
Call for Federal Intervention
The AYCF appealed to the Federal Government to:
1. Withhold funds allocated to Rivers State until a credible electoral process is ensured.
2. Investigate allegations of electoral malpractices.
3. Ensure accountability and justice for victims of electoral violence.
Rivers State Government’s Response
The Rivers State Government has not officially responded to the AYCF’s statement. However, the State’s Commissioner for Information, Paulinus Nsirim, previously defended the elections, stating:
“The polls were free, fair, and credible. We will not be distracted by baseless allegations.”
Opposition Parties’ Reactions
The Action Peoples Party (APP) and other opposition parties in Rivers State have echoed the AYCF’s concerns, calling for a review of the electoral process.
Implications
The AYCF’s call for Federal intervention highlights the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s electoral system. Withholding funds could have significant implications for Rivers State’s development projects and governance.
