The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new turn yesterday as Senator Samuel Anyanwu, one of the claimants to the office of National Secretary, resumed work at the party’s National Secretariat, Wadata House, Abuja.
Anayanwu’s Bold Move
Despite the controversy surrounding his position, Anyanwu drove into the party’s National Secretariat through the service gate behind the building without fanfare. He exchanged pleasantries with the handful of secretariat staff available before proceeding into his office.
This bold move by Anyanwu comes barely 48 hours after he petitioned security agencies to intervene in what he claimed was an attempt by the party’s 12 governors to cause chaos. The governors, led by Governor Bala Mohammed, had recognized Hon. Sunday Ude-Okoye as the National Secretary based on an Appeal Court judgment.
Anayanwu Insists on Remaining in Office
However, Anyanwu insists on remaining in office, citing a valid stay of execution order, until his pending appeal at the Supreme Court is resolved. His decision to resume work at the Secretariat is seen as a defiance of the governors’ directive and an attempt to assert his claim to the office.
Ude-Okoye’s Camp Reacts
Meanwhile, Ude-Okoye’s camp has reacted to Anyanwu’s move, describing it as a “game plan” to provoke a confrontation. A member of his camp, who spoke in confidence, said, “We know Anyanwu’s game plan. He wants a confrontation to give the impression that Ude-Okoye is violent. We will not give him that pleasure.”
The source added that Ude-Okoye’s decision not to show up at the Secretariat was strategic, aimed at avoiding confrontation and allowing the National Working Committee to take action on the governors’ advice.
Secretariat Remains Busy
Despite the tension, the Secretariat remains busy with everyday activities. Regular policemen and women attached to the Secretariat complex can be seen at their duty posts.
The situation highlights the ongoing power struggle within the PDP, with multiple claimants vying for control. The party’s leadership crisis has been ongoing for several months, with no clear resolution in sight.
As the crisis deepens, it remains to be seen how the party will resolve the issue and move forward. One thing is certain, however: the PDP’s internal crisis will continue to dominate headlines in the coming days.
